Is smoking that sweet? Is it a lollipop stick?
The Psychology of Smoking
When I see people smoking, I often wonder what make them venture into it because it is something that is really disgusting for me. Asides the fact that I know dangerous health side effects it can cause, I am just always irritated by the smell and odour of cigarettes or weed or any other ingredient that produces that pungent smoking smell.
What is it that they enjoy about smoking? Is it the smoke that it produces or the cigarette itself? Are they thrilled by the inhaling and exhaling process? Perhaps it’s the red light they see on the cigarette that fascinates them. Or maybe they enjoy the supposed “highness” that the Nicotine reaction of the whole smoking process brings to their brain. Who knows?
Sometimes, I want to go to the addicted smokers when I see them and tell them what will happen to their health in 2 to 3 years time if they don't stop. But then, I just walk away gently because I know what might happen if I do that. I might not end up in my planned destination if I do that. The hospital might just be my next stop. You know what I mean right?
But today, we quickly want to look at the two major reasons why people smoke addictively. Are you ready?
In this present age, the major reason why many people especially youths smoke addictively is because they think it is an escapade from depression.
They think it will help take them away from their depressed state and it really does but only for a very short moment. It’s only a facade that is removed in a matter of hours. After that, the depression comes back but this time stronger with the ability to break the individual and keep him wanting to smoke more and more.
Smoking never cures depression; it only worsens it.
People smoke because they want pleasure.
Some people say all depressed people also smoke for the same reason of pleasure because it’s happiness they truly want to derive from the whole process but I honestly disagree.
Pleasure isn't happiness. When people are depressed and they find no other option but smoking to derive happiness from then happiness wasn't really their goal. They were only in search of pleasure.
Yes smoking brings pleasure but that's not all to it. Not all pleasure is good pleasure. Some pleasures kill faster than viruses. A normal human being would naturally hate murder and incessant taking of lives but for terrorists, it is pleasure. Is that good pleasure? Of course not. But because of the type of orientation and ideology that those terrorists possess, they see their inhuman acts and behaviors as a thing of joy.
That is the same way it is for smokers. They think that they are enjoying but it is really killing them in the long run.
I hope this speaks life into someone today. I hope this helps someone realize the dangers that smoking poses to the mental and physical health of anyone that involves in it.
