By the time the semester was split into half, the Amanda that Opeyemi knew when they started living together was now a mirage of the new Amanda because her behavior suddenly took a new turn.
She started wearing skimpy dresses that left her almost naked. When she put on those dresses, you could see what she was wearing underneath to the extent that her bra straps and the color of her pants wouldn’t be hidden. She started keeping late nights out and when she came back, she would be dead drunk. Sometimes, she might not even come back until the next day.
Opeyemi had tried to talk to her several times in a bid to advice her to change but her efforts were futile. She decided to stop doing that after a heated conversation between the duo on one Friday evening. Friday nights were the party and clubbing nights and on that fateful evening, Amanda had just started preparing to go out so Opeyemi felt that it was the best time to talk to her.
“Amanda I know you’ll say that I have come with my wahala again but that won’t stop me from talking to you. This new way of life you have chosen will only lead to destruction. You will end up regretting your actions. I love you and I do not want you to be destroyed. I… Hey, just shut it there!” Amanda didn’t let Opeyemi finish before she shouted back in anger.
“What’s wrong with you? Who are you this small girl to advice me? Abi this one no dey alright ni? You stand there telling me that I have chosen a way of destruction. Shey na you wan dey feed me? How do you expect me to pay my bills? For your information kid, I am doing this for the money and except you can provide me with that, don’t tell me nonsense!”
“But there are other ways for you to get money Amanda.” Opeyemi said trying to make her reason from another point of view.
“I am not going to stand here and let you this little brat lecture me. This is my own way and I don’t give a fuck about any other way you think you know.” Amanda retorted in anger as she hurriedly dashed out of the room.
Later that night, thoughts of the point that Amanda was trying to explain in the heated conversation the duo had earlier on expressly came into Opeyemi’s mind. If she were to be honest with herself, she was also facing money problems.
The allowance her parents send to her on a monthly basis was barely enough for her feeding and transportation. She had many other bills like hair plaiting, books buying, data subscription, church bills, and a host of others she needed to sort out urgently.
The thought of trying out what her roommate was doing “for the money” as Amanda had put it to her earlier on came into her mind like a flash but she immediately shoved it off. She couldn’t just imagine herself indulging in that level of physical impurity when she was preaching against it herself.
Dear reader, Opeyemi is moving closer to unraveling the mystery of what went wrong. Next week, we move again. See you on what day again?
Suspense continues it's alright
