“Hey Opeyemi or what is your name, you had better come outside here and give me my money right now because I won’t accept any further stories from you today. It’s either you give me my money or I take some of your properties to go sell. I no come school con do giveaway ooo.” Gloria screamed at the top of her voice at the front of the twelve room hostel which Opeyemi and Amanda were staying.
Gloria was the only course-mate that Opeyemi was close with in school. She knew others too but they were only acquaintances of each other. She was just on the “good morning – good morning” greeting level with others. Gloria was the only one that she was friends with. And Gloria was the Assistant Class Representative so felt she would be on a safer side being friends with her.
But Gloria was more than that to Opeyemi. She would personally call Opeyemi to remind her about classes, tutorials, practical classes, et al. She would even come over to Opeyemi’s place to about an hour before class so she could hurry her up and then the both would head to school together.
When Gloria discovered that Opeyemi was going through some financial glitches, she offered to help with ten thousand naira but she said that she would be needing the money in a month's time and Opeyemi hastily agreed because she had many bills to settle. And although the ten thousand naira wouldn’t solve it all, it would go a long way.
Now, a month passed and Opeyemi couldn’t refund the money. It increased to two months, and from two, it was almost three. In the second month, things began to get ugly between Opeyemi and Gloria. Gloria stopped checking on her, she stopped reminding Opeyemi about classes, and the worst part of it all was that she wouldn’t pick Opeyemi’s calls.
In the third month when exams were closing in, the pressure from Gloria for Opeyemi to pay back the money increased and Opeyemi couldn’t blame her because she had truly been patient enough. So that morning that Gloria came ranting, Opeyemi couldn’t step out of her room. She was just stood confused in silence.
That day, Amanda was at home and she was getting irritated by the scene that was being made. She asked Opeyemi about the issue and Opeyemi explained what happened to her. Amanda felt betrayed. She was pained that Opeyemi didn’t tell her that she was struggling with her finances but that was a story for a later time. She had to resolve the matter at hand. She just picked up twelve thousand naira from her bag and went straight to the spot where Gloria was ranting.
“Hey young lady. Take your money and stop making silly noises here. No be you go first borrow person money” Amanda said as she stretched forth her right hand full of new twelve one thousand naira notes to Gloria.
Opeyemi couldn’t believe her eyes. There she was pointing fingers at Amanda that she wasn’t doing the right thing and Amanda didn’t even consider that before helping her out. Amanda just did it like she was pre-programmed to do it.
